SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Sophomore midfielder
Toby Bowser headlined a list of four Rock men's soccer student-athletes named Wednesday to Daktronics Inc. All-Atlantic Region honors.
Bowser (pictured above), a native of Beaver and graduate of Beaver High School, was named to first-team honors in voting by the region's NCAA Division II sports information directors.
Teammates
Greg Blum (sophomorer goalie),
Patrick Conley (freshman defender) and
Jeremy Deighton (junior forward) were all named to second-team all-region honors.
Bowser is The Rock's second leading scorer this fall with two goals and a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-best 14 assists. He ranks second on SRU's single-season assists chart, one shy of the school record.
Deighton, a native of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and graduate of Cleveland St. Ignatius High School, leads The Rock and ranks third in the PSAC in goals scored with 15. He also has two assists to his credit, which combined with his goals total gives him the third best scoring average in the conference. An ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-District selection, he has scored six game-winning goals this fall.
Blum, a native of Ambridge and graduate of Ambridge High School, has compiled a 1.20 goals against average and .809 save percentage this fall and has chalked up six solo shutouts.
Conley, while teaming with Blum to provide the backbone for a Rock defense that has recorded seven shutouts and held opponents to 1.90 goals per game, has also scored four goals and assisted on a fifth. Conley hails from Hurricane, W. Va., and is a graduate of St. Joseph Central Catholic High School.
The four all-region performers led The Rock to a 13-6-1 record, the most wins by a Green and White men's team since a 13-4 mark recorded by the 1976 squad under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Jim Egli.
This year's Rock squad also became only the second Rock men's unit to earn a berth in NCAA postseason competition and participated in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. The team is voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
