SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team will host a “Play for the Cure” event in conjunction with its final home game of the season, next Saturday, Oct. 24, at Thompson Stadium. The event is organized to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The event will take place surrounding The Rock and Bellarmine's 6 p.m. non-conference matchup.

This will be the first “Play for the Cure” event hosted by Slippery Rock’s field hockey program and head coach Stacey Hart is excited about the opportunity to contribute to raising funds and awareness about breast cancer.

“We’re extremely excited to be hosting this event next Saturday,” said Hart. “October is breast cancer awareness month and our student-athletes and coaches really wanted to be able to do something to contribute to the cause this year.”

The Rock will don pink jerseys for the game and will also wear pink sweatbands and pink ribbons in their hair. Two specially designed pink game balls will also be used during the game. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the event.

Donations will be accepted at the gate and in the stands throughout the game and other fundraising initiatives will take place throughout the day. Checks can be made payable to “Play 4 the Cure.”

The event is one of two fundraising initiatives planned on Oct. 24, as The Rock volleyball team will host its annual “Dig for the Cure” event in Morrow Field House beginning at 4 p.m. For more information on that event, visit the Web site here.
