Deighton earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honor

Rock men's soccer standout Jeremy Deighton's list of postseason accomplishments continued to grow Wednesday when the senior forward was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Postseason honors continued to accumulate for Slippery Rock University men's soccer standout Jeremy Deighton, who was named to third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors Wednesday in a release by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Deighton, whose list of postseason honors includes the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Player of the Year honors, was recognized Wednesday for his outstanding work on the field and in the classroom.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honor is arguably the most prestigious honor bestowed upon a student-athlete. Deighton becomes the first Rock men's soccer player to earn the honor since Mike Habalar was named to the first team in 1997. Deighton is just the second Slippery Rock male in any sport to be named to Academic All-America honors since 2002.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.30 and have significant athletic credentials. Only student-athletes named to first team Academic All-District honors are eligible for All-America honors.

Deighton, a senior marketing major, led The Rock to its best season in school history this fall. Slippery Rock climbed to a national ranking of 10th, the best in program history, and finished the year with a school record 18 wins. The Rock won its second PSAC title since 2005 when it defeated No. 1 Millersville in the championship game. Deighton was named the MVP of that match and then followed that up with a hat trick in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to lead his team to the Regional Finals for the second year in a row.

Deighton posted the third-highest single season goal and point totals in program history, netting 21 goals and adding seven assists for 49 points. He led the PSAC and the Atlantic Region in scoring and in game-winning goals with nine. For his career, he finishes with 112 points and 47 goals, both of which rank fourth all-time at SRU.

On top of his excellent play on the field, Deighton carries above a 3.6 grade point average and is actively involved in many charitable organizations on campus, namely the Athletes for Forgotten Angels organization and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Last year, he traveled to Haiti to bring supplies and help teach underprivileged children in the classroom and on the soccer field. This summer, he spent a week in New Orleans helping with the rebuilding process and running various youth sports clinics.

Deighton's list of postseason accomplishments is likely to keep growing, as he is on the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America ballot and is up for various honors through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
