Rock trio earns Baseball Writers Preseason All-America honors

Seniors Vince Lloyd (second team), Billy Messer (third team) and Jacob Oswalt (third team) were honored by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University seniors Vince Lloyd, Billy Messer and Jacob Oswalt were named Tuesday as members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Division II Preseason All-America Teams.

Lloyd (on left in picture above) was named to second-team honors, while Messer (center) and Oswalt (right) each earned third-team honors.

Lloyd, a native of New Brighton and graduate of Beaver Falls High School) led The Rock in wins with an 8-1 record and had a 3.19 earned run average last spring to earn second-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division and honorable mention NCBWA All-Atlantic Region honors. He struck out 58 and walked 24 in 53.2 innings pitched in 2009.

Messer, who hails from Slippery Rock and is a Slippery Rock Area High School graduate, is slated to be SRU's starting second baseman for a fourth consecutive season. He earned first-team All-PSAC-West, second-team American Baseball Coaches Association all-region and honorable mention NCBWA all-region honors in 2009. He was a second-team All-PSAC-West selection as a sophomore in 2008. The youngest son of Rock head coach Jeff Messer, he finished his junior season with a .344 batting average, 14 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 37 RBIs.

Oswalt is an outfielder-designated hitter from South Fork (Forest Hills High School). He earned second-team All-PSAC-West and honorable mention NCBWA all-region honors last spring after he batted .379 and had 15 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 43 RBIs as The Rock's starting left fielder.

The three Preseason All-America performers and their 2010 Rock teammates are scheduled to open their season with a three-game series Feb. 19-21 vs. Tiffin University at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. Click here to view the 2010 Rock schedule.
