HOUSTON, Texas – Slippery Rock University track and field standouts
Lacey Cochran and
Jeff Weiss both competed in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships Friday night at the University of Houston.
Both Cochran and Weiss missed qualifying for the finals in their respective events by less than a half of a second and both were the first finisher in each of their events to miss the finals cut.
Weiss, the lone member of The Rock men’s team competing at the national meet, finished seventh in his heat of the mile and had the seventh-fastest time in the preliminary round, but missed the cut by just .36 seconds. The top three positions in each of the preliminary heats advance to the final, along with the next three fastest times. Weiss’ mark of 4:18.25 in the second heat was faster than anyone in the first heat (winner was 4:24.38), but was the fourth-best time of the non-automatic qualifiers.
Cochran was painstakingly close to earning a spot in the finals of the 400-meter dash, finishing with the 10th-fastest time in the preliminary round at 57.95 seconds. The final qualifier was just .07 seconds ahead of Cochran at 57.88 seconds.
Slippery Rock will be represented Saturday at the National Championships by
Whitney Hendershot, who holds the nation’s best mark in the high jump, and
Jenn Harpp, who ranks second in the nation in the 5,000-meter run.
