WASHINGTON, Pa. – Slippery Rock University freshman
Cameron Daugherty won the pole vault with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark to lead The Rock men's outdoor track and field team at the Western PA Championships Saturday at California (Pa.) University.
Daugherty took the top honors with a clearance of 4.88 meters (16-00), eclipsing the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4.80 meters. He was joined in the event by James Schneider, who placed fourth with a clearance of 4.41 meters (14-05.50) and
Tom McKinley, who was eighth at 3.96 meters (12-11.75).
Joeri Moerman and
James Sims led The Rock sprinters at the meet, with Moerman placing second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.39 seconds. Sims followed in fourth-place at 23.24 seconds and also finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.83 seconds.
Kyle Botten paced the distance runners with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run, posting a time of 16:28.80.
Nick Kennedy led the throwers with a fifth-place showing in the javelin, landing a throw of 53.79 meters (176-06).
The Rock men's team split between three different meets this weekend, with many athletes competing at the Raleigh Relays and the decathletes competing at the Virginia Military Institute.
Slippery Rock will be back in action next Saturday, April 4, at the PSAC-West Challenge hosted by California (Pa.). Competition is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon.
