IUP rallies for 16-12 win over Rock
Slippery Rock led 8-6 at halftime, but a 6-0 Indiana (Pa.) run to open the second half sealed the PSAC-West win for the Crimson Hawks

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Indiana (Pa.) University women’s lacrosse team rallied from a two goal halftime deficit to defeat Slippery Rock, 16-12, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Wednesday night at Thompson Stadium.

After six lead changes and five ties in the first half, Slippery Rock scored the final three goals to emerge with an 8-6 lead at the intermission.

After just over five scoreless minutes opened the second half, Indiana scored six unanswered goals to take a 12-8 lead with 16:36 to play. Slippery Rock broke up the rally when Brandi Otting (pictured above) scored her first goal of the season with 16:24 to play, but the Crimson Hawks responded with two more goals to put the game out of reach.

The Rock offense was led by Amy Halls, who scored three goals and added one assist to bring her season scoring totals to 28 goals and five assists. She moves into 10th on the single-season scoring ledger at Slippery Rock and needs one more goal to move into a tie for ninth.

Emma VanDenburg and Sam Huebner each scored two goals and had one assist, while Katie Roof and Samantha Eddy each added two goals.

Roof, Eddy and Brianne Dishong each picked up four ground balls in the game, while Otting led the team in draw controls with four. Roof led the team in caused turnovers with five and VanDenburg finished with four.

Ashley Winkelspecht picked up the loss in goal after allowing 13 goals and recording 13 saves. Danielle Gonzales made her first collegiate appearance, playing the final 8:08 of the game and allowing three goals.

Indiana was led by four goals from Amanda Fetter, while Stephanie Bianco and Becca Vogt each added three goals and one assist. Katie Lee was credited with the win in goal, allowing 12 goals and recording 11 saves.

The Crimson Hawks finished the game with a 35-29 advantage in total shots and an 18-12 advantage in draw controls. Ground balls were even at 28 for each team and Indiana turned the ball over 25 times to Slippery Rock’s 22.

Both teams entered Wednesday night’s game with two overall wins and were winless in conference play. Indiana moves up in the PSAC-West with its win and now boasts a 3-5 overall record and a 1-3 mark in league play. The Rock falls to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Slippery Rock will travel to Edinboro Saturday, April 4, for a non-conference match. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Rock defeated Edinboro, which is playing its first season of NCAA Division II lacrosse, 17-6, at Thompson Stadium earlier this season.
