Rock closes season with 13-11 loss at IUP

Casey Quinn scored five goals and The Rock mounted a second-half rally, but Indiana (Pa.) hung on down the stretch to seal the 13-11 victory in the final game of the 2009 season

INDIANA, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team closed the 2009 season with a 13-11 loss at Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday night in the final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division match of the season.

The Rock trailed 10-7 midway through the second period but rallied with three unanswered goals to tie the game at 10-10 with 10:54 to play. Indiana responded with three unanswered goals of its own to regain a three-goal lead, 13-10.

Amy Halls scored just inside of five minutes to go, but neither team could find the back of the net in the final 4:59 as Indiana emerged with the 13-11 victory.

Casey Quinn led the team with five goals, while Halls added three. Brandi Otting, Katie Roof and Alison Rusnak all scored once. Alexis Slutsky and Emma VanDenburg were each credited with one assist.

Ashley Winkelspecht was credited with the loss in goal, allowing 13 goals and recording 15 saves in a complete game effort.

Indiana was led by four goals from Sarah DeMaio. Beth Glasshagel added three goals, with Alex Slinkard and Lauren Montague each adding two goals.

Katie Lee earned the win in goal, allowing 11 goals and registering 13 saves in a complete game effort.

The Crimson Hawks finished the game with advantages of 34-32 in total shots, 28-24 in shots on goal and 23-18 in ground balls.

With the loss, Slippery Rock finishes the season at 5-12 overall and 0-8 in the PSAC-West. The five wins is a marked improvement for the program, which returned to NCAA competition after a 15-year hiatus in 2007 and posted winless campaigns in each of its first two seasons. Indiana finishes at 6-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Halls finishes her freshman season with a school-record 57 goals, a total that already ranks her seventh in career goals at SRU. Quinn finished second on the team in scoring, netting 34 goals, which is tied for the sixth-most on the single-season ledger. Roof tallied 21 goals, placing her in a tie for 12th in single-season goals.
