Laura Handy recorded wins in her singles and doubles matches to lead The Rock to victory Thursday
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Junior
Laura Handy recorded wins in both her singles and doubles matches Thursday afternoon to lead the 29th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team to a 5-0 win over visiting Mercyhurst College in a "race-to-5" quarterfinal action of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.
Thursday's win was SRU's 19th in 22 matches this season and moved the Green and White into a 3:30 p.m. Friday semifinal match against Bloomsburg University on the Huskies' home court.
The winner of the Rock-Bloomsburg match will take on the winner of the semifinal match in Bloomsburg between California (Pa.) and Kutztown in Saturday's championship match.
California (17-2) enters Friday's action ranked first in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional poll, while The Rock is ranked second, Bloomsburg fourth and Kutztown sixth.
A win in Friday's match vs. Bloomsburg would pretty much lock up a host role for SRU for one of the two NCAA tournaments held in the Atlantic Region. California is a sure bet to host the other Atlantic Regional competition.
NCAA regional competition is scheduled for May 7-9.
In Thursday's match against Mercyhurst, Handy and No, 2 doubles partner
Chelsea Gibson recorded an 8-1 victory before Handy chalked up a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 2 singles match.
The other Rock win in a contested match was an 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles duel by the duo of
Kayla Blackburn and
Jessica Hilborn.
SRU's No. 3 doubles team of
Lara Rizzi and
Casey Runyan received a victory by default when Mercyhurst was unable to field a team.
Runyan also received a default win in the No. 6 singles match.
