BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The 34th-ranked Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team blanked Kutztown, 5-0, Thursday in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional semifinals and will face host Bloomsburg Friday morning in the regional championships.
The Rock (22-4) cruised to victory over Kutztown (11-6) after sweeping all three doubles points to open the match.
Kayla Blackburn and
Jessica Hilborn registered an 8-2 victory at the first position, with
Laura Handy and
Chelsea Gibson picking up an 8-6 decision in the second flight and
Lara Rizzi and
Casey Runyan earning an 8-4 win at the third position.
Rizzi defeated Shiz Suez in straight sets without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0) at the number five singles position. Runyan closed the match in the same fashion, downing Tess Wright (6-0, 6-0) at the number six position.
Each of the first four flights of singles were halted once The Rock scored the decisive fifth point.
No. 30 Bloomsburg advanced to Friday’s final after defeating Virginia State, 5-0.
Bloomsburg and Slippery Rock will play Friday morning at 9 a.m. in the Atlantic Regional finals. The winner will advance to the NCAA Round of 16, which begins May 13 in Orlando, Fla.
Bloomsburg defeated The Rock, 5-3, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinals April 24 in Bloomsburg.
