Rock falls in NCAA regional final
Junior Laura Handy won both her singles and doubles matches to lead The Rock effort; Friday's 5-3 loss to Bloomsburg gave SRU a 22-5 final record this season

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The 29th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team's 2008-09 season came to an end Friday afternoon when the Green and White dropped a 5-3 decision to hosting Bloomsburg University in the championship match of one of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional competitions.
Junior Laura Handy picked up wins in both her singles and doubles matches to lead The Rock effort. She and partner Chelsea Gibson won an 8-4 decision in the No. 2 doubles match before Handy claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles match.
Senior Kayla Blackburn won a three-set (1-6, 6-3, 6-4) decision in the No. 1 singles match to account for the other Rock point. The win gave her a final career total of 191 victories in four collegiate seasons.
Friday's loss deprived SRU of a second straight trip to the NCAA Division II national Round of 16 competition and gave The Rock a 22-5 final record for the season.
Bloomsburg will take a 15-5 record into next week's Round of 16 competition in Orlando, Fla. The Huskies are making their sixth trip to the national competition in the last eight seasons.
