Jeff Michaels formerly served as an assistant to the athletic director and interim sports information director at SRU
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Former Slippery Rock University athletic administrator Jeff Michaels was named Thursday as the acting director of intercollegiate athletics at Shippensburg University.
Michaels will serve in that capacity for the 2009-10 academic year while Shippensburg conducts a national search for a permanent AD, according to Dr. Roger L. Serr, vice president for student affairs.
Michaels fills the vacancy created by the recent resignation of Dr. Roberta L. Page, an SRU graduate, who accepted a position as a director of championships for the NCAA.
Tim Verge, head coach of men’s and women’s swimming, will serve as acting assistant athletic director under Michaels, alongside current assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator Carrie Michaels.
Jeff Michaels had served as associate director of athletics since 2005. He is chair of the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Committee and is a member of the Division II women’s lacrosse regional advisory committee. He was a facilitator for the NCAA Division II Leadership Academy for the past two years.
Prior to joining the Shippensburg staff, he served five years as an assistant to the athletics director at SRU, where he worked with compliance and facilities. He also served six months as The Rock's interim sports information director after working as the department's graduate assistant.
After serving as interim SID at The Rock, Michaels spent five years as the sports information director at Lycoming College, a Division III school in Williamsport.
Michaels earned his bachelor of arts in mass communication and political science from Lycoming in 1992 and his master’s degree in athletics administration from Slippery Rock in 1993. In May, he earned a master’s degree in sport management from California University of Pennsylvania.
Carrie Michaels, Jeff's wife, previously served as assistant women's basketball coach and assistant to the athletic director at SRU.
