#8 Rock downs Lock Haven, 5-1

The Rock women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to run away with a 5-1 win over Lock Haven Wednesday in the PSAC-West opener for each team

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.
– The No.8–ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team poured in four second half goals to run away with a 5-1 victory over Lock Haven Wednesday in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division opener for each team.

Lock Haven (1-1) scored first when Courtney Johnson tallied an unassisted goal from 24 yards out in the 19th minute and carried momentum through much of the first half. The Rock (2-0) scored when Lynsey McKey chipped in an unassisted goal from 12 yards out in the 33rd minute to send the match to halftime tied at 1-1.

Slippery Rock, the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, went on to dominate the second half, scoring four goals and controlling the momentum of the game.

The Rock took the lead when Ashley Paganie scored her first of two unassisted goals in the 67th minute. Paganie then assisted Alyssa Barrett in the 77th minute to put Slippery Rock up 3-1.

Shelby Layman scored her first goal of the season in the 85th minute, finding the net just inside the far post, and Paganie closed the scoring less than a minute later when she sent home a rebound in the 86th minute. She finished the game with nine total shots and five shots on goal.

Sarah Lacy played the full 90 minutes in goal for Slippery Rock, earning the win after allowing one goal and recording five saves. Hayley Zinn was credited with the loss for Lock Haven after allowing four goals in the second half and recording five saves. Kim Bentley allowed one goal and made three saves in the first half.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 26-8 in total shots and 15-6 in shots on goal. Lock Haven held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 2-0 overall and opens the PSAC-West schedule at 1-0. Lock Haven evens out at 1-1 overall and opens conference play at 0-1.

The Rock will host No.24 California (Pa.) in a PSAC-West game at Egli Field Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and will open a full day of home events at SRU. The Rock men's soccer team will play California (Pa.) following the women's game at 3 p.m. and The Rock football team will host Millersville at Thompson Stadium at 6 p.m.
