SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Athletes for Forgotten Angels group departed Pittsburgh airport Wednesday morning and will travel to Haiti for a week to help with cleanup following the latest earthquake to devastate the country.
The Athletes for Forgotten Angels group at Slippery Rock was formed in 2008 to assist people throughout the world that have been struck by disaster through community service efforts, sports clinics and donations of supplies.
The group, making its second trip to Haiti, has also been to New Orleans to help with the cleanup following Hurricane Katrina, St. Lucia to help organize a youth sports clinic and educate local school officials and has performed multiple community service acts on Slippery Rock's campus and in the community.
“We're very excited about this year's trip,” said
Noreen Herlihy, head coach of the SRU women's soccer team and the adviser for the group. “We have a great group of student-athletes coming this year and we're going to be delivering a lot of supplies to an area that desperately needs them.”
The group will be taking 16 large boxes of donations that include soccer balls, soccer shoes, jerseys, shorts, socks and other sports gear. More importantly, the group will also be taking pencils, crayons and other school supplies.
The group left Pittsburgh airport early Wednesday morning for Florida, where they will stay over night Wednesday before departing on a cargo plane chartered by Missionary Flights International Thursday for Haiti.
While in Haiti, the group will be stationed in Cap Haitien and staying at a modest shelter setup for various volunteer and missionary groups that come through the area.
The itinerary for the trip will vary from day to day based on which areas and tasks require the most attention from the group. Between various service projects, the group will also be delivering school supplies and sports equipment to local children and putting on free sports clinics throughout the week.
Herlihy and the group will be writing a daily journal of their experiences, which will be posted at the link above.
The Forgotten Angels group is scheduled to leave Haiti Jan. 17 and spend a night in Florida before returning to Slippery Rock Jan. 18.
A complete list of the Slippery Rock student-athletes and coaches that are on the trip is posted below. For more information about the SRU Athletes for Forgotten Angels group, or to read journals from past trips, visit the link at the top of this page.
