INDIANA, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team dropped its regular season finale, 2-1 at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rival Indiana Sunday.
Ally Banks scored a goal to give SRU the lead early in the first half but two goals by IUP in the final 15 minutes of the game stole the victory away from The Rock.
With the loss, Slippery Rock finishes its regular season with an 8-9 overall record while going 5-5 in PSAC-West action. No. 3 Indiana finished with an overall record of 13-4 and went 8-2 in the PSAC-West.
Banks opened up the scoring in the 16th minute as she scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist from
Kelsey Gustafson. The Rock outshot the Crimson Hawks, 5-4 but IUP held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. There were no other tallies in the first half as the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
Indiana came out in the second half and tested Rock goalie
Courtney Lee early. She made four saves in the first six minutes of the half to keep IUP off the board. Indiana outshot Slippery Rock 10-2 in the second half and held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Crimson Hawks finally scored in the 55th minute when Chelsea Wanamaker dribbled past Lee and scored for her fifth goal of the year to tie the game.
The game remained 1-1 until IUP scored the eventual game-winner with just 3:25 remaining in regulation. Indiana's Brielle Mackey took a penalty corner and with a loose ball out in front of the cage, Casey McGowan put it home to give IUP a 2-1 lead. The Crimson Hawks would hold off Slippery Rock in the final minutes to secure the win.
Lee made six saves in the game and falls to 8-9 on the year while second half starter, Brittany Varacallo, earns the win and is 8-0 this season.
Indiana outshot The Rock, 14-7 and held the edge in penalty corners, 19-7.
Slippery Rock travels back to Indiana Tuesday as both teams are slated to play each other in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
