SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team finished a 3-0 week with a 13-9 win over Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Saturday's game was deemed the “Stick it to Cancer” game, with both teams wearing special shirts in pregame warm-ups and with money being raised for the Headstrong Foundation to battle blood cancer. More than $550 was raised through the 50-50 raffle alone and t-shirts and other apparel was also sold throughout the semester that will go to the final total.
With Saturday's win, Slippery Rock improves to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC. Shippensburg drops to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in league action.
The Rock used four goal runs to open each half to pull ahead and make the Lady Raiders play from behind for much of the game.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 36-29 in total shots, 25-19 in shots on goal, 25-22 in ground balls and 16-9 in draw controls. The Rock was 13-of-18 on clear attempts and held Shippensburg to just 12-of-21 on the clear.
Amy Halls and
Holly Webb each recorded four points to lead SRU. The attack duo combined for 19 goals in back to back wins this weekend over Millersville and Shippensburg. Halls scored three goals and added an assist Saturday to go along with team-highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Webb netted four goals and was a perfect 2-for-2 on free position attempts.
Casey Quinn scored two goals, handed out one assis and had three ground balls.
Morgan Pettit scored one goal, had one assist and added four ground balls.

Katie Roof and
Lauren Laubach all scored one goal to round out the scorers, while Laubach added a game-high six draw controls.
Natalie Crenshaw played arguably her best game in a Rock uniform, earning the win in goal after allowing just nine goals and recording 10 saves.
Shippensburg was led by Bennett Widlake with three goals. Courtney Kennedy and Lindsey Kennedy each added two goals and one assist.
Ali Cross took the loss in goal, allowing 13 goals and recording 12 saves.
Slippery Rock jumped on Shippensburg early with four goals in the first 7:35 to force the Lady Raiders to call timeout.
Shippensburg answered with its first goal at the 20:04 mark, but The Rock responded with two more tallies to make it 6-1 with 13:34 to play in the opening period.
The Lady Raiders earned the edge the rest of the way, netting three unanswered goals to trail just 6-4 at the break.
Slippery Rock swung the momentum back in its favor at the beginning of the second half with another four goal run to make it 10-4 with just under 20 minutes to play.
The teams traded goals to make it 11-5 before Shippensburg put together its own four goal run to cut the deficit to just two, 11-9, with 6:49 to play.
Key draw control wins and late saves from Crenshaw secured the win for Slippery Rock, which added insurance goals from Webb and Quinn in the final 2:13 to put the game away.
The Rock will travel to Lock Haven Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match before returning home to host Indiana (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. match Thursday night.
