SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Past and present military veterans will be honored guests Saturday, May 4 for the Slippery Rock University baseball team's “Military Appreciation Day” event at Jack Critchfield Park, Rock head baseball coach Jeff Messer announced Tuesday.

The event will be held in conjunction with SRU's home doubleheader vs. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Gannon University.

Military Appreciation Day is sponsored by the Albert P. Gettings Memorial Foundation of New Castle and co-sponsored by the Slippery Rock Lions Club and Stanley Snyder VFW Post 7465 in Volant.

Activities are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. with a free tailgate party for all veterans in the parking lot adjacent to Critchfield Park. Veterans will also be honored during on-field ceremonies prior to the first pitch of the 4 p.m. doubleheader.

The Rock baseball team will wear specially-designed camouflage jerseys as part of the day's event.  The jersey will honor Marine Corporal Albert P. Gettings who was killed Jan. 5, 2006 while in action in Fallujah, Iraq. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with a Combat V for his heroic actions.  Albert P. Gettings was a student at SRU before entering the US Marine Corp in June, 2002.

A free-will donation will be taken during the first game of the doubleheader and, along with all the proceeds from sales in the Critchfield Park concession stand, will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project in honor of Albert P. Gettings and  veterans of all branches of the military both living and deceased.

Active and retired military personnel are asked to RSVP to Laura Vernon in the SRU Sports Information Office at 724.738.4137 or laura.vernon@sru.edu by 5 p.m. Monday, April 29.

SRU will also honor the three senior student-athletes on this year's baseball team May 4. Senior Day events will be held prior to the start of the second game of the doubleheader vs. Gannon.
