Printable BracketINDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University football team will be one of 24 Division II teams competing for a National Championship as The Rock was announced as the No. 5 seed in Super Region One Sunday evening during the NCAA Selection Show.
Â
The NCAA playoff appearance will be the second consecutive and the fifth in program history for Slippery Rock, which was also the No. 5 seed in the region last year.
Â
The selections announced Sunday were surprising to many in that there was significant movement. No team from last week's top six remained in the same position.
Â
Concord moved up to the No. 1 seed after its win over Shepherd, while Bloomsburg dropped just one position into the No. 2 seed after losing to The Rock Saturday. One of the biggest surprises was at the No. 3 seed. Virginia State was No. 7 last week and jumped all the way up to No. 3 Sunday, passing 10-1 West Chester, which dropped into the No. 4 slot. Slippery Rock moved up from No. 8 to No. 5 and LIU-Post, which wasn't even ranked in the top 10 last week, moved into the No. 6 spot.
Â
Concord and Bloomsburg will both have first round byes and will then host second round games Nov. 29.
Â
Slippery Rock will travel to West Chester Saturday, Nov. 22, for a first round game and LIU-Post will travel to Virginia State the same day.
Â
The winner of the Slippery Rock vs. West Chester game will travel to No. 1 Concord Nov. 29, while the winner of LIU-Post vs. Virginia State will travel to Bloomsburg for the second round.
Â
Slippery Rock owns a 9-2 overall record and is the only team in the region with a win over one of the top two teams in the rankings, having defeated Bloomsburg yesterday for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship when the Huskies were previously undefeated and ranked fifth in the nation.
Â
Slippery Rock was the fifth seed last year and traveled to Winston-Salem State in the first round, ultimately dropping that game 27-20 and bowing out of the tournament.
Â
West Chester, at 10-1 this season, won the region last year and advanced to the national semifinals before falling to national runner-up Lenoir Rhyne.
Â
The tentative kickoff time for the first round game at West Chester is set for noon. More details, including coverage options and complete game notes will be available early this week.
