Martin named preseason All-American, Rock ranked No. 9

Marcus Martin has been named a Sporting News Preseason All-American and The Rock football team is listed in the Sporting News and Lindy's Sports top-25 preseason polls.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football team has been ranked in the Division II preseason top-25 poll by both Sporting News and Lindy's and sophomore defensive end Marcus Martin has been named a preseason All-American by Sporting News.
 
The latest issue of Sporting News that is on retail shelves currently includes the Division II preseason poll that ranks Slippery Rock No. 9 overall and second among four Super Region 1 institutions in the top-25. The Rock was also ranked No. 25 in the Lindy's Sports preseason poll (both polls listed below).
 
Martin was listed in the Sporting News issue as a preseason All-American after his breakout freshman year last fall. He broke the SRU single-season sack record and finished with 16.0 sacks to help lead The Rock to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship and an NCAA tournament appearance.
 
Martin was named the PSAC Western Division Freshman of the Year and went on to earn All-America honors from Daktronics, D2football.com, AP Little and the Don Hansen Football Gazette. He was also named as a national finalist for the Cliff Harris Award, which recognizes the top small college defensive player in the country.
 
Slippery Rock finished the 2014 season with a 9-3 overall record and won the PSAC championship by defeating then unbeaten and fifth-ranked Bloomsburg. The Rock won the PSAC West title for the third time in the last four years.
 
Concord is the top Super Region 1 team listed in the Sporting News preseason rankings at No. 5. Slippery Rock follows at No. 9 and the region is also represented by PSAC Eastern Division institutions Bloomsburg at No. 13 and West Chester at No. 18.
 
Bloomsburg is the top Super Region 1 team in the Lindy's poll at No. 4. The region is represented by Concord at No. 7, West Chester at No. 16 and Slippery Rock at No. 25.
 
The Rock will open the 2015 season on the road at the University of New Haven (Conn.) Sept. 5.
