Welcome back and Happy New Year from the women’s basketball team!

After a nice Christmas break home with our families we all returned to Slippery Rock on the twenty-sixth.  Normally my drive from home in NY to SRU takes me three hours at most but on this trip it took me over five hours because of the huge snow storm that hit the state of Pennsylvania.  After a long nerve wreaking car ride I made it back to SRU and drove through my first snowstorm successfully.

Ever since we came back from break we have been having two-a-day practices since we do not start classes until January 28th.  We have been literally eating, sleeping and breathing basketball for the past few weeks and it seems to be paying off.  We wrapped up our crossover games against the eastern conference on a positive note.  We went 2-0 this weekend against East Stroudsburg and Kutztown.  Both of the games were exciting and it was as if a new and improved Slippery Rock team came to play.  We played hard, smart and together for both games, which resulted in the wins.  Contributions have been coming from everyone on the team.  Things finally seem to be clicking into place for this young team and our focus is definitely there.  However, we will not be settling for just these two wins, we are hungry for more and know we still have improvements to make.

Not only have we been in the gym this break but we have also stepped into the classroom a couple times.  We have had some sessions with John Rindy who works in the career center at Slippery Rock.  During these sessions we have done activities to help us figure out what we want for our future careers along with career opportunities and resume building.  As a senior who will be graduating in the spring I found these sessions especially helpful.  Here at SRU we definitely put the student in “student-athlete.”

I really appreciate this time of basketball season.  We are right in the middle of the season with just our west conference games to focus on.  We don’t have any classes or studying to worry about for the most part.  The only thing we have to focus on is basketball and getting better as a team.  Getting to spend the rest of my free time with my teammates is a great plus too!  Speaking of hanging out with the team we have a team dinner at Coach Longo’s house to prepare for our game against Lock Haven.  Thanks for all the support!
