While we’re at PNC Park waiting to see if former Rock star Matt Adams will get into the Monday night’s first game of the five-game series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, here’s another installment in our series of updates on past and present Rock baseball players’ summer successes:
• Seven members of the 2014 Rock squad helped Johnstown Realty win the All American Amateur Baseball Association's Altoona Regional championship last Sunday.
That group included infielders
Jordan Faretta and
Ty Zimmerman, catcher
Ryan Hill, outfielders
Brandon Myers and
Jake Weibley and pitchers
Garret Peterson and
Kyle Schneider.
With the regional title, the Realtors locked up a berth in the AAABA National Tournament, which runs Aug. 5-12 at Point Stadium in Johnstown, for which they will serve as the host team.
Faretta had five RBIs with a two-run single and a three-run double, Weibly smacked a two-run home run and Myers slapped a double in the Realtors’ 13-1 waltz past the Youngstown Glaciers in the championship game.
One day earlier, Peterson and Schneider teamed up to pitch the Realtors to a 4-2 win over Youngstown in the winners’ bracket final game. Rock players also played significant offensive roles as Myers had a two-run double and Weibley stroked a run-scoring single.
• Former Rock pitching standout Lou Trivino picked up his first professional win last Friday (July 26). The 11th-round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics in this year’s amateur baseball draft, Trivino struck out seven, walked two, hit one batter and allowed one earned run on five hits in six and one-third innings. The lanky right-hander now owns a 1-2 record with a 3.49 ERA, has struck out 22 strikeouts, allowed 12 runs (11 earned) on 23 hits, issued 11 bases on balls and hit seven batters in 28.1 innings of New York-Penn League, short-season Class A competition.
• Prior to action last Sunday, Rock senior shortstop Will Kengor led the Cal Ripken League in bases on balls with 32 and ranked second in hitting with a .354 average. Kengor also had collected 11 doubles, three triples, one home run and 13 RBIs in 44 games.
That’s all for now. Until next time …
GO ROCK!!
