EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.
Jeff Weiss claimed an individual championship to lead the Slippery Rock University men’s indoor track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.

Shippensburg claimed the team title with a final score of 134 points. Lock Haven placed second with 129 points, followed by East Stroudsburg (120), Slippery Rock (91) and Indiana (80).

Weiss won the title in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:29.93, finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Weiss also scored points with a sixth-place finish in the mile (4:21.20).

The Rock saw second-place finishes in two events and third-place finishes in three events on the final day of competition.

Mike Rose placed second in the heptathlon with a final score of 4,559 points. He was joined in third-place by Brady Wert with a score of 4,539 points.

The Rock also placed two runners in the top-three in the 800-meter run. Jason Jamieson placed second with a time of 1:55.89, followed by Phil Rector in third at 1:56.10.

The final third-place finish for the men came from Kris Stalma in the 55-meter hurdles. Stalma posted a time of 7.68 seconds in the finals.

Joeri Moerman scored points in two individual events on Sunday, placing fifth in the 400-meter dash (49.48 seconds) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (23.54 seconds). He was joined by Nate Shadeck in the 400m, placing eighth with a time of 50.51 seconds.

Moerman and Shadeck were joined by Rector and James Sims in the 4x400-meter relay. The foursome placed sixth with a time of 3:24.49.

Rounding out The Rock’s scorers on Sunday was Terrece Draper, who placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.54 meters (44-05.25).

The team will travel to Florida for spring break before qualified individuals travel to Texas to compete in the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Houston on March 13-14.

Officially accepted entries into the National Championships will be announced later in the week.
